Identifying Honda misfires
Posted to Technical Tips Forum on 5/2/2019 16 Replies

Early obd 2 Hondas (from 1996- 2003ish) do not have a misfire counter in any scan tool and a misfire in any cylinder typically sets codes in all cylinders, making identifying the bad cylinder a little tough.

Many techs are unaware that Honda vehicles have a "check mode" just like Toyota. When the "short SCS connector" function is enabled in the scan tool, this will put Hondas into check mode and enable 1 trip code setting.

So to identify the offending cylinder, erase the codes, short the SCS connector(either through the scan tool,or physically) and restart the vehicle.

A misfire code will set for a specific cylinder in just a few minutes. That first cylinder that codes is your offender.(Sometimes a P1399 will set first, followed by a specific cylinder)
