One of the only old oil filled coils that failed regularly was a Bosch unit used on Volvo 700 series cars through the 80's. Those I tested by pulling the coil wire away at idle. It has to be able to sustain arc 1/4 inch past the tower. Any less than that, hard... Login to read more.
