I asked a very sharp electrical engineer and he said it is due to a magnetic flux-capacitor sine wave inversion kerfarkle.

Seriously, he said a bad diode can unbalance the currents in the 3-phase stator windings and cause a vibration that we hear as a howl. Login to read more.
