Misfire Cylinder Identification by IR gun?

On a current TechHelp (Jeep Liberty misfire, closed) one poster suggested an IR gun could be used to identify a misfiring cylinder as being cooler than the others.

The vehicle did not have a MIL, no word on whether Mode$6 was examined.
