And to Expand on this when you have a clamping diode or resistor in line ( the easy way to make a ref hi or low ) it also allows you to have a diagnostic self test in your PCM. If the circuit had a range of 0v to 5 v or 0v to 12v you could not run such a test... Login to read more.
