I've read about this test in an automotive machine shop textbook, but never tried it.

Verify the (clean) condition of the spark plugs or replace them. Adjust the ignition timing to 10 ATDC. Allow the engine to idle for 15 minutes. Inspect the plugs... Login to read more.
