What gases constitute the inert portion of exhaust gases?

EGR is used to lower combustion temp's becasue it is mostly inert, so the engineers say. Typical exhaust gases on a OBDII car may be 14% CO2 and maybe 1% HC & CO. What constitutes the other 80% ++ of the exhaust gases. Is it nitrogen? Login to read more.
