Connecting rods-oiler hole-why is it there?

I notice on some engines ( Toyota, Honda, Etc ), They have a hole from the upper rod cap running to a oil located on the side of the rod, A hole which squirts oil at I assume the piston pin, or is it to lubricate the cylinder wall.
