I think its possible but unlikely. I had a mitsubishi fuso where i used the wrong timing marks and it definitely made contact by hand. Reset timing and not a single issue. Had a friend who is the diy type of guy do it on a VW 4cyl and he definitely bent valves... Login to read more.
