thanks to all who replied. replaced #5 intake rocker arm, was worn bad on bottom side. i believe this engine has been apart & intake valve bridge was installed backwards causing side wear on rocker arm. thanks again, merry christmas.

My lean problem was solved by replacing the intake manifold pressure relief valve. In the event of a backfire it relieves pressure to avoid damage to the plastic intake. The valve, with 2-3' diameter housing is available from GM for just under $40.00 list. Rot... Trouble codes: P0171 (Lean Bank 1), P0174 (Lean Bank 2).
