GM 3.4L Oil Pan Side Bolt Oil Leak
Posted to Technical Discussion Forum on 4/2/2014 7 Replies

Had an oil leak on a customer's car that traced to the left front of engine coming from one of the bolts that go into the side of the oil pan. The front side oil pan bolt (under the A/C compressor) was loose. I tightened it up and snugged up the remaining five oil pan side bolts, and degreased the area.

My question is - could I have REMOVED that loose oil pan side bolt to clean it and add a touch of silicone sealant for the oil leak, or does it hold something in place that would drop down inside the cast aluminum oil pan if the bolt is unscrewed?

I have found pictures and diagrams that show the side bolt(s), but not what is threaded into. I have a number of customers with that engine and am sure I will run into this oil leak again. Thanks for taking the time to read this post. Any input is appreciated.
