Vacuum Filling Combination Pressure/Overflow tanks (coolant)
Posted to HD/Fleet Forum on 12/11/2017 13 Replies

Just out of curiosity. Anyone figure out a slick way to vacuum fill these, most commonly found on Freightliners? Doesn't matter if it's a Detroit, CAT, or Benz they seem to all have a very similar setup.

You cannot fill through the pressure side, because you constantly pull air in from the overflow portion while attempting to pull into a vacuum.

You cannot fill through the overflow side because coolant will only partially fill the pressure side of the system. Once the system burps, it will push the coolant out of the overflow.

These tanks seem to be a good idea in theory, but for the technician trying to do the "right" thing, it makes it a whole lot more difficult.
