Cat enine looses prime and dies
Posted to HD/Fleet Forum on 12/30/2012 45 Replies

Serial #9RSO4314. Engine is on a Freightliner dump truck and it dies while driving. When it dies I can pump the priming pump next to the fuel filter and the engine will start and run until it is shut down and then it will die after running a short distance. The fuel looks clean. The filters looked new but I changed them anyway with no improvement. I would like to know how this engine pumps fuel from the tank to the engine. I don't see a pre-pump or any other pump. I removed what Mitchael called a priming pump but all I see there is a spring and a check valve so I am guessing it is just to make the fuel filter get fuel when the filter is changed The fuel tank is lower than the engine so it cannot be gravity feed so how does the fuel get to the engine and what are the most common problems that might cause a cat diesel to die. There are no rags in the fuel tank and no air leaks I can find. Any help will be appreciated.
